Reiki is one of my favourite things. In a couple of months I’ll have been doing it for 20 whole years. I’ve been doing shamanic healing that long too, and magical work for longer than that – and I think that’s why sometimes people in those worlds are surprised to hear about my love of Reiki. Among visionary healers, Reiki is usually considered to be mainstream – and, to be fair, it is probably the most normal thing I do! For the really big work – understanding energy healing, soul level work, deep trauma healing – Reiki might not feel like the tool to reach for. It can feel too light, too gentle, or even too easy.
But I disagree! You’ve probably heard my say a million times that Reiki is one of the most essential tools a healer can have. And it’s because of all that good stuff it gives you – permanent connection to source, innate protectiveness in the energy, strong visionary development, groundedness and compassion intertwined…
It also amplifies the effectiveness of the other energy work you are doing. So, when I’m doing a shamanic healing ceremony or a sound healing, why would I not also being in Reiki? What I am finding more than ever is that the healing work is then stronger, and the integration easier. (Fun side note – I’m even using it for magic these days…)
Reiki requires skill
Just “let the Reiki flow”, they say. I actually say it myself – it’s a reflex, plus it also is actually true. Letting go and letting ourselves be the vessel is a powerful experience, and it’s a big part of what Reiki is. But this is also a path of real skill, and I am a Reiki nerd. Skill and understanding in Reiki are the bits that get me going.
I must have trained hundreds of Reiki people over the years, and the best parts of those training days and retreats are never the moments where we just “let the Reiki flow”. The best moments are where I say “do this precise, deliberate thing and see what happens”, and then students are blown away by their own results. These are the moments where we realise that we are capable of creating real change through this work! They are moments of real power.
