Happy new year! 1:1 – we are standing in the gateway.

There is something about the first day of the year that feels momentous. I notice it every time, even though I remind myself that it is all a little bit arbitrary. Has anything really changed, since yesterday? Is the season different, is the collective? Am I?

The answer I come up with every year is: yes. Something has changed, and all of us have, temporarily at least, embraced the idea that the world is different. We can do it differently, from today. We have the power to do that, and it’s a power that didn’t exist so strongly while we were eating our Christmas dinners just a week ago. Where does that power come from?

There is magic in the gateway

The definition of magic – the real stuff, not the stuff of fantasy novels or stage illusions – is this: the harnessing and directing of energy in accordance with personal will, to create change. In the practice of magic and indeed all energy healing work, we do not use our own personal energy for this because it’s such an easily exhaustible fuel source. We “raise” energy through focused actions like chanting, movement or visualisation. Or we connect to a source of energy that is pretty much inexhaustible – like connecting to the Reiki source to do healing work. You can do these things alone, but the effect is more powerful if we do this as a collective – everyone in the group can feel how much stronger it is when we share the vision. What we are tapping into becomes the battery to power the work.

This is what January is. It’s why we really, truly are different right now as I type this on New Year’s Day than we were yesterday. There is a new battery available for all of us, even though that kissed goodbye to 2024 with trepidation or a little too much bubbly. It is the power of the collective – a power we didn’t have access to in December.

Many of us on the path of spiritual healing actively seek out these gateways all the time. We find them on our birthdays, the solstices, in a sunrise, or at any meaningful end and beginning in our lives. Often we have people to work with, amplifying the source energy we have to work with while we craft a change or a healing in our lives.

The reason this particular gateway is so magical is this: we’re all in on it! Not just those who would name it a gateway, or people who believe in energy and spirituality and magic. Everyone who starts a new project today, or gives up takeaways for the month, or signs up to the gym, or starts Couch 2 5k (even though it is raining), or logs in to the writing class, or sticks their positive affirmation to the window, or…. they’re all at it, every grabbing at this new beginning, a chance to become a happier version of themselves than they were in 2024.

All of this powers the battery of collective intent. That battery is real, and so is the gateway in which we are all standing. So put your doubts aside and realise that today really is different! Harness that energy to do whatever you have dreamed up for your 2025 self – it’s available.
