Yes. I am a nerd – a Reiki nerd. Many of you know this already, so there’s probably no need for me to have made a headline about it. But I’ve had the joy of meeting many new people in the mystical space that is the internet lately, so for the avoidance of doubt in any new followers among you I thought I’d say so outright. I am a Reiki nerd.

Wil Wheaton (Star Trek alum and professional geek) said that being a nerd is not about what you like, it’s about the way you like it. That it excites so much, you want to learn every detail, and then you want to share that information anyone who asks, pouring onto them an insane amount of detail bouncing up and down in your chair as you do it, hoping that they too will feel joy in the receiving of this information.

That’s how I feel about Reiki. I am sure there are many lovely serene Reiki teachers who glide through the world and provide access to a cocooning inner peace and stillness from Reiki. Speaking softly and building their sanctuary out of that peace. I know that for some people that is what they are seeking from this beautiful healing source, a quiet, tranquil space of stillness and peaceful healing. And it sounds really lovely to me – I like to go sit in that space sometimes too! But I want to be forthright with you all here: I am not that guy.

I am just shy of 21 years in the Reiki world now and I have my next Reiki 1 course on Saturday. I have no doubt the peaceful bliss of Reiki will make itself known to them, as it does to me – there is no missing that. But afterwards, when they open their eyes, they will not be met by a beatific half smile and a sage nod. I will be bouncing up and down in my seat clapping, saying: “did you see that? How bloody cool was that?! And let me tell you something else, dudes…” Because I am a Reiki nerd.

Being a nerd makes me a good resource. I’ve spent two decades devouring information, experimenting, sharing and practising – which is good news for you, if you have nerd inclinations yourself. It means I can share with you the big, mystical stuff; the existential web onto which the tapestry of Reiki is so beautifully embroidered. This is my absolute favourite thing! And I get to share with you the granular detail, the whys and the wherefores, the skill of Reiki. Going beyond having a spiritual experience into being skilful – in fact, into being really knowledgeable and really bloody good. And that, my friends, is my absolute favourite thing.
