Cord cutting is a well established healing technique based on the premise that, with our thoughts and interactions, we create an energetic web of connection as we move through the world. The situations and relationships that summon the strongest responses in us, and therefore the most energy, create the strongest connections. Sometimes, those connections become binding and leave us unable to make change.
There are many ways to cut the cords that holding us back. Mine, like all my shamanic healing techniques, is grounded in the use of the Reiki source energy. This makes any real word transformation needed much easier, as well as better protecting the client’s energy body and assisting in the integration of insights necessary to prevent further entanglements.
Cord cutting might seem like the opposite of one of my other primary healing tools, power retrieval. Power retrieval (simply put) is an infusion of source energy and shamanic medicine that gives us healing, or the energy we need to create change in our lives. But in fact, it is an important form of the same thing.

You already have power: you’re giving it away
The shamanic worldview would say that all of us have power – true power, in the sense of both our unique medicine that flavours our lives and the raw energy it requires in order to do anything. At some points in our lives we lose power become weakened or depressed, but in the shamanic worldview we cannot be completely power-less. Without some shamanic power, we would no longer be alive. So, even when you’re at your lowest, you are *not* powerless. So that’s good news!
But when we do get run down and low on energy, it is often because that power is being given away. In therapeutic or coaching language, people talk about people pleasing, enabling, lack of boundaries, that sort of thing. It can be helpful to catch ways that our behaviour is draining us, but our connections to people, identities and ideas are not just behaviours. We have poured energy into creating and holding them, sometimes for many years, and with every thought or act we strengthen those energetic cords of our personal web.
When we are connecting with our power and source energy, perhaps through regular healings or meditations, we expect that our lives will improve in line with this new energy we’ve introduced into our lives. Sometimes, though, it doesn’t. Frustrating as it is when that happened, it can be an indicator that there is a cord that needs cutting. Releasing our connections to draining patterns can have immediate increase in energy, helping us recover from illness or move forward on a quest.
Stopping the loss of energy to our old patterns is a way to retrieve our power.
