Healing and changes at the new moon

The cycle of the moon is one of the natural prompts in my life, something I’ve been paying attention to and drawing on for the last 20 years or so. When I was a young witch in training, I attended group rituals at every full moon – a practice I kept up for years. I came to think of it as an essential part of my routine: gathering when the moon was at the height of its power. Much of that work was devotional, but I would also use that time to put my magical focus on something that I felt needed the influence of that power and illumination. I know I’m talking about magic here, and connection with the divine, and this blog is about healing. But over the years I have found that there isn’t much that separates those things. Healing is magic.

The new moon never quite grabbed my attention in the same way back then, though. I would notice it as a good time to start something new but only to incorporate it into something I already was doing. In recent years, though, it’s become as much a part of my routine as the full moon.

I use it as a prompt, a touchstone in my regular routine. I tend to do soul or power retrieval work for myself – identifying healing needs and places where I have lost energy – when the moon is full. At new moon, I do look to the other side of the equation. What do I need to let go of, what needs to be cleansed. New moon is an excellent time for focused cord cutting, extraction work and releasing projections.

The coming new moon (15 September at 02:29, here in the UK) has a slightly different energy. It is full of the healing energy of September – letting go of what is holding us back, or is simply no longer appropriate, so that we can move forward into a brand new chapter. Classic new moon energy!

But, also in line with the time of year, this isn’t strictly speaking time to begin something brand new. We are in the harvest season, which means we are drawing on the fruits of what already planted. So these aren’t strictly speaking, times for new beginnings. These are times for advancement.

So. As I’ve been saying to my Propolos subscribers for weeks now, the most powerful approach for our self healing at this time is to do both: let go of what no longer serves us and step forward into whatever it is that comes next. Release, and call in. Just make sure that what we are calling in is building on what we have done before.

What are your new moon traditions and routines? And do you have plans to mark the coming September new moon? We all have a powerful opportunity coming to let go and to restate our desires under the dark sky.

Join me for the work

This month I am offering reduced price cord cutting sessions (over Zoom) to help you let go of anything that you’re struggling to let go of at this time. Book before the new moon to take advantage of the £30 session offer.

If you are Reiki 2 or above, join me for a one day Reiki Cord Cutting Workshop in Glastonbury on 16 September. This is a fusion of Reiki source energy and shamanic healing techniques (see my blog post, A Shamanic Approach to Reiki).

Sign up to Propolos, my monthly subscription for healers, on Patreon. The September healers’ reading is already up, and we will as always be doing a powerful healing at the new moon.
